Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Hollingworth Preschool at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an Assistant Preschool Teacher to join the faculty. The incumbent will demonstrate a desire to learn pedagogical methodology in the early childhood classroom, a capacity for nurturing the growth and development of preschool children, and a willingness to carry out the mission of the Hollingworth Preschool. The Assistant Teacher will work under the direction of the preschool director and collaboratively with all preschool staff.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Curriculum:

  • Support the creation of and implementation of an inclusive, caring, respectful, positive classroom community for preschool children on a daily basis
  • Support the children’s participation in all classroom activities at an individualized, developmentally appropriate level
  • Support the creation of curriculum design and learning experiences to ensure the development of each child’s potential
  • Support and/or lead lessons, small group investigations, and participate at school-wide special events
  • Provide classroom coverage for the Head Teacher by leading and facilitating the classroom itinerary and supervising the children

Early Childhood Documentation:

  • Document each child through daily class observations and compiling anecdotal records
  • Upload photos to each child’s photo account and support the head teachers with maintaining children’s Brightwheel accounts
  • Participate in child study meetings
  • Continuously scaffold each child to ensure ongoing growth
  • Participate and interact with the children during all daily activities across every component of the day

Professional Learning:

  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities
  • Participate in cycles of inquiry, book clubs, and asynchronous reflections throughout the school year

Classroom Care:

  • Assist in maintaining a clean and organized classroom environment
  • Support the organization, storage, and cleaning of materials
  • Contribute to organizing and maintaining the library
  • Help ensure the teacher work area is tidy and well-organized.

Hollingworth Preschool is a program of The Hollingworth Center with the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at TC. Hollingworth Preschool is rooted in the ethos of Teachers College and grounded in the theories of John Dewey and Maxine Greene. Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA in progress in early childhood, child development, or a related area at Teachers College
  • One year of experience with young children in a formal or informal setting, or experience providing care in a home environment
  • The ability to meet all safety and administrative requirements, specifically completing the mandatory training(s) outlined by the Teachers College Minors on Campus Policies as well as New York City Bureau of Child Care.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting
  • Ability to adhere to the highest standards of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Ability to manage all responsibilities with respect, initiative, attention to detail, organization, and independent follow-through
  • Ability to lift at least 35 pounds.
  • Must have verifiable documentation of immunization record according to the standards set by the NYC DOH Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to start in late August 2026 and commit through at least June 2027
  • Experience with music, movement, dance, or theater education
  • Interest in potentially working through the 2027 - 2028 school year
  • Fluency in English and at least one of the following languages: Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, or Ukrainian
  • Must be available to work 20 - 27 hours per week between 8:30am - 3:15pm. Schedule to be determined.

Salary Range:

$22.50 - $22.50
