Posting Summary:
The Office of Access & Services for Individuals w/ Disabilities (OASID) at Teachers College is seeking an Accommodations Specialist to coordinate accommodations and support services for faculty, staff, and students to ensure that individuals with disabilities can participate fully and equitably in the Teachers College community.
Basic Function:
The Office of Access & Services for Individuals w/ Disabilities (OASID) at Teachers College is seeking an Accommodations Specialist to coordinate accommodations and support services for faculty, staff, and students to ensure that individuals with disabilities can participate fully and equitably in the Teachers College community.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a frontline contact for students faculty, staff and visitors, the Accommodations Specialist will work on various tasks related to the provision of accommodations such as notetaking, alternative text, and exam accommodations as outlined below:
Accessible Resources
- Prepare & process alternative text format requests to be used in conjunction with Kurzweil-accessible software
- Identify and train text editors that convert documents to an accessible format
- Allocate work assignments to text editors and provide materials to students with accommodations
- Distribute software licenses to eligible students
- Troubleshoot issues related to assistive technology licenses
- Provide direct assistance to the Associate Director with the alternative text conversion process as needed
- Identify eligible note-takers for students with notetaking accommodations and assist with timesheet concerns
- Process and distribute lecture notes from note-takers to individuals utilizing the accommodation
- Process and distribute lecture notes from note-takers to individuals utilizing the accommodation
Exam Accommodations
- Oversee the delivery of test accommodations to students with disabilities such as extra time on exams, distraction-reduced environment, use of assistive technology and software, use of student reader or scribe, use of a calculator, computers or special equipment, etc.
- Provide training on the test accommodation process for students with exam accommodations and exam proctors
- Coordinate logistics of the exam planning process with the student, faculty member/program staff, and exam proctor
- Provide day-to-day oversight in arranging for routine test accommodations requests from students
- Seek additional consultation for accommodation requests that require special circumstances, when to act, and when to seek additional consultation with the Associate Director and Director as needed
- Assist with notifying instructors and other identified community members regarding student accommodations via accommodation letters
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in training or experience
- A minimum of 2 years of related experience is required, preferably in providing services for students with disabilities in a college or university setting
- Experience with alternative text format procedures
- Strong written, oral, interpersonal, problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage competing priorities
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency with a wide array of assistive technologies and basic computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and G-Suite
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong attention to detail.
- Must have a genuine desire to serve and work with a diverse population of different cultures, and demonstrate patience and dedication to meet their needs
- Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times, possess a high level of professionalism and be customer-service driven and flexible in attitude
- Ability to understand and operate in an environment with regulatory compliance requirements
- Must maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy, and adhere to Federal and FERPA guidelines.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn software to support accommodations services
- Knowledge and understanding of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in AbbyFineReader and Kurzweil technologies
- Experience providing test accommodations to university-level students with disabilities
- Fluency in using Google Suite, and database management systems
- Working knowledge of assistive technology hardware and software, as well as standard computer hardware and software
Salary Range:
$56,000 - $70,000

Hybrid/Remote
Teachers College maintains a hybrid work environment, which provides employees with flexible work arrangements, while ensuring we preserve the important aspects of our unique in-person college-campus culture. Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite or in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days). Employees are expected to live within a 150-mile radius of the College.
