The Digital Futures Institute (DFI) at Teachers College Columbia The university was created in 2020 in response to the explosive growth of media and technology in education. The Institute fulfills the dual mandate of providing media and technology services to the Teachers College community and developing and researching the use of media and technology in education. DFI brings together experts in educational technology, media production, instructional design, and innovative use of physical space to develop impactful and playful educational experiences.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Associate Director of Design Education’s responsibility is to manage operations for the DFI Gallery and Design Studio. The ideal candidate has an in-depth understanding of visual identity, fostering creativity, and promoting artistic excellence, in addition to ensuring the maintenance of assets and equipment. The candidate must be able to work closely with faculty, students, and administrators to assess the viability of projects and programming within the DFI gallery and design studio. This position requires strong project management skills, technical knowledge of design studio equipment and technology, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities at once.

Minimum Qualifications

  •  Hold a Master's degree (MA or MFA) in fine arts, visual arts, design, media, education,
    or a related field
  •  Demonstrated experience in artistic leadership and managing creative teams
  •  Possess a portfolio showcasing a diverse range of artistic work
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suite, and other 2D / 3D design software
  • Physical design, carpentry, and other fabrication proficiency
  • Have a deep appreciation for the intersection of art, technology, and society
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into visually impactful artistic expressions
  • Familiarity with academic research and the ability to integrate artistic elements into
    academic projects is advantageous.
  • 4+ years managing the full life cycle of live productions
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple teams leads to coordinating efforts and
    meeting deadlines
  • Excellent project management skills; acute attention to detail and process
  • Position uses ladders 6-16 feet in height, so must be able to carry and climb them
  • Use of a variety of electrical, battery-operated and manual hand tools
  • Able to climb stairs, traverse elevated catwalks and walkways, and on a variety of
    surfaces including wood, stone, steel, and concrete
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds routinely
  • Work in closely confined spaces low to the ground
  • Frequent bending, twisting and extending of arms above the head to perform work and
    support weight

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree or Doctorate in fine arts, visual arts, design, media, education, or a
    related field
  • Experience in curating artistic exhibitions and galleries
  • Proven success in utilizing artistic expressions to enhance the impact of academic
    research
  • Previous experience in a multidisciplinary academic environment
  • An extensive network within the artistic and academic communities
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
  • Familiarity with a wide range of production equipment including but not limited to:
    cameras, lighting, sound, and streaming equipment
  • Experience working with industry vendors
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced,
    deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong leadership skills: the ability to manage, motivate and coach both permanent and
    temporary staff
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate with self-starters who can
    work effectively on their own with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in GSuite, including spreadsheets, docs, and presentations

Salary Range:

80,000-90,000

Hybrid/Remote
Teachers College maintains a hybrid work environment, which provides employees with flexible work arrangements, while ensuring we preserve the important aspects of our unique in-person college-campus culture. Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite or in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days). Employees are expected to live within a 150-mile radius of the College.
