Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Mason/General Mechanics position performs journeyman level mason work requiring expertise in installing, maintaining, and repairing different types of building bricks, stones, concrete, caulking, brick pointing, pinning, tiling and other repairs and other work as assigned. In addition, the mason also maintains an adequate and appropriate stock of supplies, and equipment and performs additional job-related but not limited duties as assigned by the Facilities Staff and management.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and repair structures using bricks, brick pointing, caulking, concrete, grout, plastering, cement, ceramic tiles, stone, paving stones, rebar and stone pinning, and grout color matching.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment for masonry work
  • Work on stucco application, renovation, restoration, and roofing projects
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed
  • Cut, shape, and smooth bricks and other materials according to measurements
  • Inspect places and conduct repairs or maintenance
  • Assist as required and cooperate with all tradespeople and custodians in the performance of day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints to construct walls, walkways, and other structures

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience directly related to this position. 
  • Must possess knowledge and technical skills required for the repair and maintenance of bricks, stones, ceramic and vinyl tiles, concrete, and other materials as needed.
  • Must possess the technical knowledge and skill to perform minor carpentry work and repairs. 
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to follow oral diagrams and written instructions. 
  • Work effectively under time pressure. 
  • Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills. 
  • Knowledge of cementing door frames, masonry cleaning, and sealing, paving stone repairs and replacement, and repointing brick walls.
  • Knowledge of setting up forms, installing slabs, and copper counter flashing on parapet walls.

Skills:

  • Ability to use computers and handheld devices.
  • Ability to understand work orders and assignments either verbally or through the work order system.
  • Ability to maintain a complete inventory of all bricks, blocks, mortar, and other materials associated with the mason trade.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, and masonry wet saws (handheld and stationary).
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors, staff and students, and faculty, as well as independently 
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, control, and direct all aspects of required corrective and preventative maintenance for all academic spaces and residential housing. 

Physical Effort: 

  • Requires strenuous physical work, heavy lifting, and/or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds regularly with efficiency
  • Physical mobility (stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, standing, walking, climbing, twisting, stretching, reaching)
  • Vision and hearing acuity appropriate to the efficient and effective reception of oral and written instructions and communication and completion of tasks.
  • Ability to work off ladders, scaffolds, and power lifts.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with building and repairing structures using bricks, brick pointing, caulking, concrete, grout, plastering, cement, ceramic tiles, stone, paving stones, rebar and stone pinning, and grout color matching.
  • Experience utilizing hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment for masonry work.

Salary Range:

$36.49 - $36.49
