Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Programs in Anthropology at Teachers College, Columbia University invite applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Teaching position, beginning January 2027. This is a non-tenure track, nine-month, renewable appointment.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
We seek a scholar whose research and teaching addresses the intersections of our two programs, applied anthropology and anthropology of education, and whose expertise will contribute to both the intellectual vitality and strategic direction of them.
The Applied Anthropology program provides a unique home for students inspired to bridge deep social theory with practical, real-world action. The new M.A. in Applied Anthropology is the first Ivy League graduate program of its kind. The Anthropology and Education program aims to better understand inequalities, cultural differences, linguistic diversity, and the wealth of human life for educational purposes. Students examine educational processes in schools and classrooms, in families, on street corners, in community centers, in churches, and in all other non-conventional education settings. Across both programs, approximately half of our students pursue research in the United States.
Area interests should complement and expand those of current faculty, including those in the other programs in the Department (International and Comparative Education and Sustainability and Education). Applicants should have experience in anthropological theory and method, and ideally with applied, practicing, public, or engaged anthropology. We are interested in candidates with specializations in STS (Science Technology Studies); urban anthropology; institutions and infrastructures; community and family studies; cultural heritage; migration; among others.
We especially welcome candidates with experience teaching and mentoring graduate students.
Responsibilities:
● Teach five courses per year (2-3 or 3-2), including routinely offering core method, theory, and applied courses in the graduate curriculum and the master’s student pro-seminar. In addition to teaching within the existing catalog, the successful candidate may bring new courses to the program.
● Lead advisor for master’s students and assist with coordination of applied practicum.
● Serve as a reader for doctoral student exams and dissertations.
● Participate in service within the program and department.
Application Instructions:
Please include the following:
● A cover letter detailing your research, teaching, and service interests
● Curriculum vitae
● Teaching statement
● A sample syllabus from a course that you’ve taught
● One scholarly writing sample (e.g., journal articles, book chapters, or conference papers)
● Names of three professional references (full letters will be requested for shortlisted candidates).
Application review begins October 22 and will continue until the position is filled.
