Position Summary:
The Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a qualitative Senior Research Assistant II to join multiple multi-year, grant-funded research projects focused on studying community colleges involved in the national “guided pathways” reform movement. Candidates should have experience helping to design and conduct qualitative education and/or social science research and have a well-articulated interest in improving access to and success in community colleges and postsecondary education. The position responsibilities include project planning and coordination, data collection and analysis, and writing and dissemination. Ability to work as part of a team, to write research notes and reports quickly and clearly, and balance multiple project tasks are essential. The position is based in New York City and travel is required.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest, resume, and two (2) academic writing samples (each no longer than 10 pages) in addition to their application.

Responsibilities:
Project Planning
o Identify, critically review, and synthesize relevant literature
o Contribute to the formulation of research questions and aligned data collection and analysis strategies
o Draft and revise research-related documents, including study prospectus, fieldwork guidelines, and interview protocols.

Project Coordination
o Oversee and coordinate preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) materials for submission
o Maintain records related to the progress of research and activities
o Assist with the organization and execution of research team meetings
o Organize, log and secure data in accordance with CCRC data security procedures
o Independently respond to internal and external requests for information
o Contribute to project updates for funders

Data Collection and Analysis
o Plan college site visits (i.e., coordinate with college research liaisons, recruit participants, and schedule interviews and focus groups)
o Independently conduct observations, interviews, and focus groups in person and by telephone.
o Draft, review, and edit data collection and analysis documents, including field notes, fieldwork debriefs, and analytic memos
o Use qualitative data analysis software techniques to manage and analyze data
o Extrapolate research findings from data analysis

Writing
o Contribute to the drafting and revising of analytic memos and reports
o Participate in the development of report storylines
o Co-author study reports and other written products
o Participate in the CCRC internal paper review process

Dissemination and Field Building
o Present research findings at meetings and conferences under the supervision of senior project staff
o Represent CCRC at meetings, events, and conferences under the supervision of senior project staff

CCRC Service
o Participate in Center events and professional development activities

Minimum Qualifications:

● Master’s degree or advanced graduate training in higher education, education, or equivalent social science
● Coursework or experience in qualitative research methods
● Experience drafting and revising field notes, research papers and articles, either independently or as part of a team
● Excellent organizational and analytical skills
● Outstanding oral and written communication skills
● Track record of delivering high-quality work product under deadline
● Good judgment, reliability, and ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
● Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
● Travel is required

Preferred Qualifications:

● Graduate-level coursework or research experience related to higher education, education reform, organizational change, teaching and learning, or program evaluation
● Coursework or experience in quantitative research methods
● Experience as a teacher, staff or administrator at a community college or other broad-access postsecondary institution
● Proficiency with Dedoose or similar qualitative data analysis program
● Valid driver license
