Posting Summary:

Our TR@TC induction team seeks experienced mentors who have Science (Living Environments) or TESOL backgrounds and are interested in enthusiastically supporting the growth and development of new teachers.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Teaching Residents at Teachers College (TR@TC) induction program has been designed to support newly certified teachers who are working in urban, high-need schools. The induction program is part of TR@TC's 18-month federally funded graduate level teacher preparation program. Following graduation from the TR@TC program, alumni participate in the TR@TC induction program, where they receive individual mentorship and targeted professional development. Our induction team seeks experienced mentors who have Science, TESOL or Special Education backgrounds who are interested in enthusiastically supporting the growth and development of new teachers.

As a member of our team, you will work with individually assigned mentees, who, as new teachers, have a variety of needs and are working to grow in different ways. Induction Mentors support their mentees in self-directed learning and work with them to build individual and internal capacity as they work to maintain growth oriented practice and a commitment to social justice.

The role of an Induction Mentor includes, but is not limited to:

  • Engaging new teachers in their classrooms as co-teaching mentors and observers;
  • Working with new teachers to develop on-going, reflective individual growth plans;
  • Engaging with new teachers in learning opportunities, such as guided observations and curriculum planning;
  • Collaborating with the induction team to develop and enact professional development for new teachers;
  • Working with the induction team as we engage in on-going development of the induction program;
  • Reporting to and collaborating with the Induction Coordinator to foster growth of mentees, identify next steps of support, and continuing personal development as an Induction Mentor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an education related field
  • 3 years of teaching experience at the secondary level
  • Teaching certification in secondary Science Education (Biology, Earth Science or Chemistry), TESOL or Teaching Students with Disabilities
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Ability to effectively interact and engage with others in unfamiliar contexts
  • Ability to develop strong, positive, and professional relationships
  • Flexibility to visit schools and meet with teachers during school days/hours
  • Cannot currently be a full-time teacher.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with high-needs urban schools, especially at the secondary level, and in NYC
  • Experience mentoring/supporting beginning teachers
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt in mentoring approach and supports
  • Experience building partnerships and collaborating with diverse groups
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-layered system
  • Substantial NYC teaching experience in a public school

Salary Range:

$1500 - $3,000
