Posting Summary:

The Teacher Opportunity Corps II Program at Teachers College is managed by TC’s Office of Teacher Education and is designed to affirm, support, and sustain aspiring teachers from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in the New York State teaching force. Each year, we support a cohort of twenty TC TOC students with tuition assistance, internship experience in NYC DOE schools, seminars with top TC faculty, professional development opportunities, and opportunities for rich peer support.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, TOC graduates will receive induction support during their first year of teaching. As part of the TOC Induction Program, TOC graduates will receive one-on-one mentorship that is tailored to their needs and their teaching context. Our induction team seeks experienced mentors who are interested in enthusiastically supporting the growth and development of new New York City teachers.

As a member of our team, you will work with individually assigned mentees, who, as new teachers, have a variety of needs and are working to grow their practice in different ways.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The New Teacher Induction Program at Teachers College is managed by TC’s Office of Teacher Education and is designed to affirm, support, and sustain aspiring teachers from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in the New York State teaching force as well as teachers of high-need subject areas in NYC. For the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years, we will support an annual cohort of twenty-five TC graduates with induction support. As part of the NTI Induction Program, selected graduates will receive one-on-one mentorship that is tailored to their needs and their teaching context. Our induction team seeks experienced mentors who are interested in enthusiastically supporting the growth and development of new New York City teachers.

As a member of our team, you will work with individually assigned mentees, who, as new teachers, have a variety of needs and are working to grow their practice in different ways.

The role of an Induction Mentor may include and is not limited to:

  • Supporting and celebrating new teachers in their classrooms as co-teaching mentors and observers
  • Working with new teachers to identify goals throughout the year (professional goals, self-care goals, and learning goals for students)
  • Engaging with new teachers in developing practices, strategies, and routines that cultivate a positive classroom learning community, and supporting new teachers with strategies for responding to challenging behavior
  • Engaging with new teachers in lesson planning and curriculum planning
  • Engaging with new teachers in assessment design and analysis of student work
  • Collaborating with mentee to identify resources, strategies, and learning opportunities that might support mentee’s growth and self-advocacy within their context
  • Collaborating with the induction team to identify needs common to new teachers in order to inform professional development opportunities for the group
  • Reporting to and collaborating with the OTE Associate Director, NTI Research Assistant, and induction team to foster growth of mentees, and identify opportunities for improvement within the induction program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an education related field
  • 3 years of teaching experience in an urban setting
  • Teaching certification (seeking a variety of areas, as we have graduates from a variety of programs)
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Ability to effectively interact and engage with others in unfamiliar contexts, particularly within NYC DOE schools
  • Ability to develop strong, positive, and professional relationships
  • Availability to visit schools and meet with teachers during school days/hours
  • Cannot currently be a full-time teacher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with high-needs urban schools, especially in NYC
  • Experience mentoring/supporting beginning teachers
  • Experience communicating with principals and administrators about school visits and support for beginning teachers
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt mentoring approach and supports
  • Experience building partnerships and collaborating with diverse groups
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-layered system
  • Substantial NYC teaching experience in a public school

Salary Range:

$2,000 - $20,000 (depending on number of mentees)
