Posting Summary:
Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a Director of TC Next, who will be responsible for the continued success and promotion of the College’s vision for the career and professional development support for students. The incumbent will provide oversight, strategic planning and development for the office.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs, the Director will be responsible for leading an innovative team and promoting an inclusive team culture. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing strategic leadership in the development and implementation of innovative, comprehensive, and centralized initiatives for post-graduate success through an integrated approach to career and professional development. 

The Director will work with students, academic departments and programs to ensure that the learning and engagement outcomes are related to professional and career development. The incumbent also will engage with faculty in the development of learning opportunities to connect the graduate curriculum at TC with post graduate academic and career success in all sectors.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Lead and manage full-time, part-time and student staff
  • Manage the administrative and fiscal operations of the Office including providing mentorship and leadership to the staff, and facilitating professional development and training opportunities as needed
  • Evaluate and implement the use of technology and systems
  • Manage, evaluate, and report on data regarding student outcomes
  • Provide oversight of the departmental budgets and make recommendations for effective use of the fiscal resources available.
  • Serve on student-centered programs and special project initiatives as assigned by Vice Provost


  • Work collaboratively with leadership, faculty, and staff across the College
  • Seek faculty involvement in identifying opportunities to bridge the academic development that takes place in the classroom with co-curricular (internships, fellowships, research, and jobs) and postgraduate opportunities
  • Identify and collaborate with campus partners including enrollment services, academic departments and programs, institutional research, alumni relations, development and external affairs and other offices to create an integrated approach and vision of post-graduate success
  • Serve on College-wide committees as requested
  • Represent TC NEXT at orientations, College trainings and professional development events

Strategic Leadership/Program planning and implementation

  • Develop and supervise all aspects of TC NEXT, including the strategy and innovation for launching the office/initiative within the community and beyond.
  • This includes:
    • regular assessment of programs and services sing what currently exists for career support and  to make data informed decisions that support: 
    • making decisions about what to continue and what to rethink, including: career advisement for students and alumni, career search strategies, cultivation and promotion of on-campus student employment opportunities, doctoral program counseling and application assistance, access to fellowships and scholarships, grants, research opportunities, and the development of relationships with potential employers, fieldwork and internship providers.
    • Initiate, develop, and implement post-graduation career development activities to enhance post graduate success for students and alumni.
  • Ensure that all TC NEXT initiatives align with the College’s varying and evolving curriculum. 
  • Support with the Associate Director of Employer Relations to implement recruitment and employer engagement strategies to foster and develop new and existing relationships
  • Support Associate Director of Academic Advising with enhancing and developing current career coaching initiatives including conceptualizing and planning conferences, seminars, and other student-centered initiatives. 

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Manages database conversions and oversees all technology efforts for TC NEXT
  • Use data-informed and equity-focused approach to enhance student access and enrollment in collaboration with multiple internal stakeholders, primarily the Office of Institutional Research
  • Monitor student engagement and its impact on student retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes – particularly for special and underrepresented populations
  • Work with teams and IT to maintain and utilize features of Symplicity CRM, evaluating, communicating and implementing data gathered for enhancing 
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in higher education/student affairs administration, counseling, business, technology management, psychology, human resources or a related field
  • Minimum 7 + years of related experience with at least 5 years' experience managing a team
  • Possess excellent leadership, management, organizational, interpersonal, high-level of attention to detail, active listening skills, communication, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated skill in project management with excellent analytical, organizational and management skills
  • Knowledge of computer office software (MS Word, PowerPoint & Excel) and ability to learn online technologies (Symplicity, Canva, Zoom, etc.)
  • Must possess the ability to effectively manage, lead, develop, and supervise staff
  • Must be a strategic thinker, creative, highly motivated and have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Track record of motivating, developing and driving performance through team leadership
  • Ability to effectively partner with a variety of constituents such as students, employers, administrators, faculty and senior staff
  • Must be able to problem-solve, troubleshoot, and work independently in a dynamic team environment
  • Demonstrated experience using data and reporting to measure results
  • Must be able to navigate multiple viewpoints and constituencies with positivity and professionalism
  • Ability to create and manage a budget
  • Ability to manage and prioritize all tasks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in management or other business field, student services, education, or related discipline
  • Experience in higher education
  • Knowledge and understanding of compliance and regulatory issues related to career and student employment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current technology and web-based applications in
    career services, grants and fellowships
  • Strong negotiation, issue resolution, and influencing skills

Salary Range:
$90,400 - $110,000
