Posting Summary:
The Office of International Students and Scholars at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an Assistant Director who will be responsible for maintaining and updating student and scholar records, providing information and guidance to TC's international students regarding federal immigration regulations and procedures as well as development and implementation of services and programming for international students.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, the Assistant Director is primarily responsible for maintaining and updating student and scholar records in the federal government SEVIS system using Sunapsis for batch submissions to the SEVIS database; ensuring the College's continuing compliance with the SEVIS reporting requirements; communicating SEVIS updates to other staff members involved in international student and scholar advising; prepare internal and external reports; and troubleshooting software problems at the campus and government levels.

The incumbent will also provide information and guidance to TC's international students regarding federal immigration regulations and procedures, TC resources, and personal/cultural matters. The Assistant Director will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 students and as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for J-1 students and scholars. In addition, the Assistant Director will assist with the development and implementation of services and programming for international students, scholars, and the TC community.


Student Advising & Support

  • Serve as F-1 Designated School Official (DSO) ensuring government regulations and compliance
  • Serve as J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) ensuring compliance and government regulations regarding international exchange visitors
  • Serve as liaison with USCIS, DoS, ICE, and SEVP regarding regulation updates and student/scholar records
  • Coordinate/oversee collection and transmission of data to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by coordinating records and data flow from the college database (Banner) to Sunapsis and to SEVIS
  • Advise and counsel international students, scholars and their dependents regarding their immigration status in the U.S. Assist international students and scholars in obtaining maximum benefits under their status
  • Support the life cycle of an international student through admission to graduation including processing and producing data records/documents for international students and scholars from admission to completion/graduation
  • Advise international students on cross-cultural, academic and personal issues
  • Remain current with SEVIS regulatory updates to ensure institutional compliance


  • Advise other institutional offices on federal regulations that govern and affect international students and scholars
  • Coordinate with the Senior Associate Director with the completion of internal and external reports, including J-1 Annual Report and IIE / Open Doors

Programming (10%)

  • Develop appropriate pre- and post-arrival information and materials.
  • Coordinate international student workshops
  • Assist with development and implementation of cross-cultural programming opportunities for students
  • Manage production of weekly e-newsletter, communicating programming and related information
  • Take active roles in coordinating with other TC offices/staff on community-wide cross-cultural programming initiatives

System Maintenance (5%)

  • Manage the Sunapsis and SEVIS database system
  • Coordinate with the IT department on system maintenance
  • Maintain OISS website and listservs

Other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Perform other duties as assigned to maintain operations and services

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training and experience
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience, including prior experience with SEVIS functions and/or batch systems, database development and management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal immigration regulations and procedures related to international students and scholars (F-1 and J-1)
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve complex student immigration issues. Ability to interact with and advise students from diverse cultures
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a busy student services office
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills; detail oriented
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals as well as independently. Strong interest in international education and/or student advising
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident in order to serve as a DSO/ARO according to federal regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a field related to international/higher education
  • Experience managing SEVIS records and preparing reports in a batch processing environment; experience with Banner and Sunapsis software web maintenance and desktop publishing experience
